Lung Health Checks are on the move!

From 1 August 2019, the Manchester Lung Health Checks are making their way to Tesco in Cheetham Hill. The MOT for your lungs will now be available to anyone registered with a GP in the Cheetham or Crumpsall area, between the ages of 55 and 80, who is a smoker or an ex- smoker.

When we talk about smoking and the harm it causes, some people assume we are just talking about cigarettes. We are however, also talking about shisha. Shisha is a water pipe from which a mixture of tobacco and flavourings are smoked. The tobacco is heated beneath the charcoal and the heat pushes the smoke into a water container, where it bubbles through and then leaves the container via a hose where you inhale it.

Contrary to popular belief, smoking shisha is not safer than smoking cigarettes and studies show that smoking shisha for one hour is the equivalent of smoking 200 cigarettes.

Dr Murugesean Raja, clinical lead for respiratory medicine at Manchester Health and Care Commissioning said: “The misconception that smoking shisha is not as harmful or addictive as smoking cigarettes is a real concern. People are duped by the flavour of this pastime, when evidence suggests that it can increase the chances of getting lung cancer, and can cause heart problems and other long term lung conditions.”

During appointments at the Lung Health Check unit, as well as carrying out the checks to make sure your lungs are nice and healthy, the highly trained staff are able to offer free and helpful advice on how to cut down or stop smoking all together.

If you’re registered with a GP practice and have received your invite to a lung health check, then please call 0161 290 3580 to book your appointment. If you’re registered with a GP practice in the area and are between the ages of 55 and 80 but haven’t yet received your letter then don’t worry, you’ll get it in the next few weeks.

In the meantime why not watch our Lung Health Check video so you can find out a bit more about what happens on the day. It’s now available in British Sign Language! If your require information on the Lung Health Checks in any additional formats or languages please contact Jessica Herbert on
