COVID-19 Mortality Information

You asked

I am writing to ask how many actual deaths there been in the trust(s) due directly to Covid19 and deaths with Covid19 (where there have been pre-existing conditions) from February until most recently, ie end of November.

Would it be possible for you to say what evidence there is that identified Covid19 was included on the death certificates? i.e. if a post-mortem was carried out and Covid identified.

Our response

NHS England publish data on deaths of patients who have died in hospitals in England and have tested positive for COVID-19, split by trust, so the requester can be directed there, or we can easily extract the latest data.

We do not hold the information for the second question. There are ICD-10 codes available to certifying doctors who wish to record COVID as a cause of death on the death certificate (U07.1 “COVID-19, virus identified” and U07.2 “COVID-19, virus not identified”) and that this information is used by ONS to publish data on a weekly basis on deaths involving COVID-19.
